State Bar of Texas Reaches Out to Veterans

Among the many types of assistance veterans may need is legal counsel. Access to lawyers and legal clinics can be of great value, especially if help is needed with disability claims.

Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans (TLTV) is a volunteer program through the State Bar of Texas. According to its website, the program’s mission is “to develop and assist pro bono legal clinics throughout the state for military veterans who otherwise cannot afford or do not have access to the legal services they need.”

The program was created by former State Bar of Texas President Terry Tottenham, himself a veteran of the Marine Corps. Of TLTV, he said, “Our military servicemen and women have made great sacrifices in duty to their country. As lawyers, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of a great many veterans–and in the families of soldiers who did not return.”

While the state bar does not provide direct legal services, it can connect veterans to local bar associations and free legal clinics where they can seek the counsel they need. Links are provided on the website to a number of city bar associations and legal clinics by county. Veterans are encouraged to visit the site for clinic dates, locations and contact information.

Among the legal topics covered in these clinics are such important issues as bankruptcy, child support, contracts, divorce, child custody, guardianship, probate, landlord/tenant, wills/estate planning, employment, housing and taxes.
