Each October 26, we celebrate National Day of the Deployed, a time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of our country’s bravest.
The day asks that we keep these men and women in our hearts and minds as they give so much so far from home. But if you’re close to one of these fine Americans—perhaps one of them is your husband, wife, father or mother—you don’t need a special day as a reminder. But what you might need are some fun, creative ways to make deployment easier. So let’s explore:
Deployment wall. This works especially well if you’ve got kids. A deployment wall, made up of maps and clocks with different time zones and photos, is a great way to create a presence for mom or dad while he or she is away. It’s a good idea to include a calendar on the wall, too. That way everyone can take part in the countdown until mom or dad returns. Don’t be afraid to get creative, and be sure to let the kids take part in the fun.
Deployment binder. Staying organized helps keep stress levels down. Consider assembling documents and ideas related to your loved one’s deployment in a single binder. You can store budgets and lists for care packages here, as well as important contact information, to-do lists and documents related to insurance or health care.
Open When letters. If you need more ways to stay connected to your deployed loved one, consider writing Open When letters. They’re another great way to stay connected. And if your loved one has problems getting mail when deployed, send him or her off with a bundle beforehand. These can be opened on special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries or even in times of loneliness and boredom. And don’t forget to have fun with these, too. You can decorate them or fill the envelopes with pictures or small gifts.
Tens of thousands of American troops are deployed in various places across the world each year. These men and women work hard to keep us safe and free. They put it all on the line, and just like you, Veteran Energy is proud of what they accomplish. And we’re happy to celebrate National Day of the Deployed.
