More Reasons to Love Your Pet on National Love Your Pet Day

February 20 invites us to focus on the special relationship we have with the animals we keep. It’s National Love Your Pet Day.

Whether covered in scales, feathers or fur, pets are a mainstay in most American homes. And that’s a good thing, according to many experts. Here are a few reasons why:

Just by being around, some pets—especially dogs—lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Scientists aren’t exactly sure how this happens. But they can see that it works. Studies show that pets help lower blood pressure in their owners. And evidence also suggests that pets lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Heart attack patients who have pets have been shown to live longer than those who don’t.

Groups like Paws for Heroes—a Veteran Energy Affinity Partner—know first-hand the healing power of pets. This Texas group pairs trained dogs with veterans and military members. The group’s goal is to provide emotional support and companionship, especially for those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The folks at Paws for Heroes say dogs help lower stress-related hormones in humans while also boosting the hormones that help us feel good. When bonding with dogs, the brain produces chemicals that are the opposite of those associated with PTSD. Paws for Heroes reports that many of their veterans are happier after being paired with a dog. These heroes find it easier to deal with life’s challenges.

Another Veteran Energy Affinity Group, the Lone Survivor Foundation, is well acquainted with the healing power of animals, too. This group seeks to help service members and their families adjust to some of the traumas sometimes experienced in the military. One of the techniques they use to accomplish this involves horses and equine assisted learning (EAL).

It turns out that horses are a great tool for healing and self-discovery. Working with these animals helps one deal with frustration and anger. It helps lower stress and fear.

Horses tend to mimic the emotions and the responses of the participants. And this provides valuable feedback. It makes it easier to see where problems are so participants can begin to move past them.

Pets offer love, friendship and healing. And we’re so glad they’ve been a part of so many people’s lives. From all of us here at Veteran Energy, happy National Love Your Pet Day!
