If there’s one thing Texas is known for, it’s energy production. From fossil fuels like oil and natural gas to renewables like wind energy, Texas is a leader. But there’s great potential for Texas solar power, too.
The state’s never-ending expanse of sun-drenched territory and spread-out populations makes it a perfect place to harness the sun. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that Texas solar power could make up 20 percent of the country’s potential for production.
And that’s great for the Lone Star State. Solar power can save homeowners money. It puts people to work, and it’s great for the environment.
And in recent years, the cost to go solar has plummeted. Some estimate it’s fallen by 70 percent since 2010. And that’s a trend predicted to continue.
On top of the falling costs, the federal government gives solar tax rebates that can knock 30 percent off the cost to get started. And the State of Texas exempts solar installations from your property taxes. So, even though solar will boost your property value, you won’t see a tax increase because of it.
And in three cities in the state, your local utility will offer rebates on solar systems, as well. We’ve listed them below to help you learn more.
Austin. In the state’s capital, Austin Energy offers a capacity-based incentive for homeowners of up to 10 kilowatts (kW) of solar PV per home. Austin Energy gives bill credits for electricity produced with home solar units. This doesn’t include leased solar power systems or electricity from a third-party provider.
Dallas. ONCOR Energy offers rebates in the Dallas area. Incentives will vary based on the type and size of the solar PV system used, though savings can equal up to 25 percent off the cost of your system. ONCOR offers incentives for systems bought outright or with a loan.
San Antonio. CPS Energy offers rebates on the purchase and installation of a solar system. Homeowners can save up to 40 percent. This doesn’t cover the costs associated with leasing a system. CPS also offers a maximum rebate of up to $2,000 for solar water heaters.
At Veteran Energy, we’re excited about the future of solar power and what it means for Texas, the country and the world. Here’s to sunny weather.
