National Military Appreciation Month

Veteran Energy believes more can be done for America’s veterans, currently serving military and their families. One of the simplest things is to honor, respect and show gratitude for their service to the country.

According to Military.com, “Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our service members past and present. Each year the president makes a proclamation, reminding Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country.”

How It Started

The official website NMAM.org says, “The first legislation began in 1999. . . . With the support and sponsorship of Senator John McCain and Representative Duncan Hunter . . . along with 50 other veteran service organizations, this important legislation states to our service members that we they protect, set aside an entire month to honor, remember and appreciate their service and the dedication from their families.”

The legislation passed Congress without one no vote.

What You Can Do

The NMAM website has a long list of ways you can participate and show your appreciation. What you do can be simple, such as visiting a veterans hospital. Or it can be elaborate, such as businesses giving discounts to military ID card holders.

Whatever you do during National Military Appreciation Month, Veteran Energy thanks you. In the words of the NMAM website, “[This month] recognizes. . . .all branches of the services, the National Guard and Reserves plus relatives, veterans and all of their families–well over 90 million Americans and more than 230 years of our nation’s history. Let us celebrate them just as we celebrate the other important entities that make up this wonderful country of ours.”
